Learn About Fishing Cape Cod Ponds

By Betty Green

For folks who love to fish, visiting Brewster Massachusetts will prove to be a great experience. Brewster offers over three hundred sixty stocked ponds. Folks will enjoy some of the greatest fishing Cape Cod offers. Sheeps Pond, Baker Pond, and Nickerson State Park are three of the more popular areas attracting fishermen from everywhere.

The Nickerson State Park has four ponds that are stocked each spring and fall with trout. This park is open all year. The state raised fish that the ponds are stocked with include rainbow, brown, and tiger trout. Occasionally folks may catch small or large mouth bass, and yellow perch. Although the park is open throughout the year the roads are not always plowed in the winter. So if you plan your trip for the winter months make sure to be prepared.

Next, Bakers Pond is also strongly suggested. This pond is not easy to get to and parking is very limited. The best way to catch fish here is by using a small boat or kayak. The pond is stocked with largemouth bass yearly. Late fall and early spring are the best times to fish in this area.

Located in Brewster, Sheeps Pond has plenty of parking and features a good looking boat ramp. Gas powered motor boats are permitted on the pond but are restricted to not more than three horsepower. This is a great spot to slowly troll for different types of fish. The water is so clear that folks can see as far as 10 feet down. This is also a very busy pond during the summer months so getting started early is recommended.

Three kinds of bait are recommended for freshwater ponds. The types includes power bait, night crawlers, and shiners. Night crawlers are injected with air so they will float. Power bait is a soft doughy material that floats on the top of the water and used for trout fishing. Using a shiner you may choose to use a bobber so the bait stays in the spot most likely to be struck by a fish.

Trout are less likely to be spooked in low light. That is why early morning before the sun is up and evening after the sun goes down, are ideal times to fish. Trout will swim along the shoreline during this time looking for food. Many people enjoy the quiet of this time of day and find it very relaxing.

Brown trout are known to be night feeders. When the temperatures get warmer during the summer months, the trout will move to deeper water. To improve your chance of catching them, use a small boat or kayak to get out to the deep part of the pond.

When you plan your next trip look at the many ponds Massachusetts has to offer. Even though the three mentioned are great spots, it is worth looking into all other areas. If you love to fish you will be hard pressed to run out of terrific spots to spend your time.
