By Ryan Young

A smooth sporting club that is used in sports such as softball, cricket, and baseball is known as a bat. The type of sport determines whether the bat will be made out of wood or metal. Baseball gaming activities usually use wooden bats. Whenever the ball is thrown by a pitcher, the bat is used to hit the ball. A diameter of 72 mm and 40 inches is the size of a bat. The type of wood determines the weight of the bat. There are also Custom wood bats in use today.

When it comes to the making of clubs, ash wood is commonly used by the manufacturers. Apart from ash wood other types can be used like hickory, bamboo, and maple. The selection of the material to be used depends mostly on the flexibility of the player. The hickory clubs are disadvantaged as they are heavy and may make one to slow down in the game.

For most wooden clubs, the label is usually placed on the weaker side of the wood. The bat should be held in manner that after striking the ball the label should remain facing either the sky or the ground. This plays a great role in minimizing the chances of the bat acquiring a fracture and increases the energy with which the player strikes the ball.

Selecting the kind of material for a wooden bat depends on the way the bat will develop a fracture. The kind of wood used determines the type of fracture made. The label in the ash type of bat is located at the region where the grain is widest. This is unlike the maple type in which labels are placed at places with tightest grain. The difference in fracture is as a result of the difference of this kind.

Bats are either to be hollowed or corked. The filling of a bat with, wild material especially cork is known as corking. Corking is a setback when it comes to the game because it increases how fast the club moves. This lessens the hitting power of a player, making it easier for the pitcher to outdo their opponents.

Although the type of material that the bat is made of is considered to dictate the durability, proper care and maintenance also determine the lifespan. Normally, bats should be cleaned properly with alcohol or any other appropriate liquid after every match. The same should be done after every training session.

The age of a player should be considered whenever wooden clubs are made. Complex clubs are given to the older players unlike in comparison to the younger players. The diameter of a bat should not be more than 57 mm and this is for the players who are at the age 12 years and below. It is 15 mm less than that of a best player.

The aptness of bat can be determined by the tastes and preferences of the user. In some cases the hitter may prefer a bat that has a lot of weight compared to the light bat. Other factors affecting the suitability of a bat are the grip of a player and their physicality.
