Basis Of Black Mental Health

By Jerry Nelson

Problems like money worries, stress and family issues could lead to mental illnesses like anxiety and depression. It is not that unusual for one to have mental illnesses but in some places people tend to keep off from these people. Cases of anxiety and depression are mostly related to black mental health living in white countries. It is because of things they face like racism and unemployment.

In first world countries these people are faced with bad experiences like poor housing, unemployment and racism. Every day has a different impact in the lives of these people. All these stress can make them ill mentally. With these illnesses most of these colored people fear to get help from the hospitals. They are scared of losing their contract jobs or losing their friends.

Moving from one country to a different one contributes a lot into the mental state of a person. This explains why most black people who have moved into the white countries fall into depression. Their kids are put in a worse situation when they have to learn how to cope with issues of racism and bullying. Most of these people barely seek help until it is too late.

A problem shared is half solved. For a family that has moved from an African family it could be easy to get mental issues. They were used to talking to their friends when they had issues and now have no one. People in the country they have moved into could be very busy and have no time to listen to their troubles. Others are not friendly and one does not know who to trust.

When things are not okay say it. It is wrong to pretend you are fine and you are suffering inside. That is how most blacks in foreign countries behave. There are organizations ready and willing to help if one consults them. These organizations consider your cultural and religious beliefs and would not go against them. They also cater for language barrier issues by giving you a translator.

Despite the steps taken to fight against racism it still continues to be a major impact in the status of black people. A lot of them have no access to good hospitals and are deprived right to good education. They are sometimes homeless and to put up with the harsh street life most of them turn to drugs. Substance use puts these people at a higher risk of getting these illnesses.

Cases of these issues in black people living below poverty line are high compared to those above. Many of them are suspects of robbery with violence and mass shootings compared to their white counterparts. This bruises their self-esteem and would result into post-traumatic stress. They feel like nobody has their interest at heart.

One needs to stay healthy to solve such issues. They should eat well and reduce the amount of alcohol intake. Most of these black people in white countries turn to excessive alcohol consumption when they are stressed. Someone who knows a person suffering from these illnesses should be supportive and constantly keep in touch.
