Understanding PRP Therapy Portland Oregon

By Jason Anderson

In recent reports, a number of medical health care providers were arrested and arraigned on drug charges for over-prescribing opioids. In some cases, the individuals may have been legitimately over prescribing pain medication. Whereas, there are also individuals whom have chronic conditions which require pain medication on an ongoing basis. As such, a number of orthopedic specialists and pain management professionals are now advising individuals to seek alternatives to pills such as prp therapy portland or other injections to aid in healing an injury or managing pain.

To date, PRP injections have been studied with regards to use in plastic surgery, oral surgery, osteoarthritis and chronic tendinitis. In most cases, the most positive results were with regards to use in the knees for osteoarthritis. After a few random controls in 2009, health care providers discovered the efficacy and safety of the treatments.

In 2009, another study analyzed the benefits associated with oral surgery such as sinus lifts and similar treatments. In all cases, the results indicated the therapy having no benefit with relation to oral surgeries. Whereas, while beneficial in osteoarthritis in the knee, other skeletal injuries failed to react positively to the treatment showing little to no elimination of pain and no change in mobility.

While originally believed to have been able to heal bone injuries, only one study out of four in 2016 showed this to be the case. Whereas, beginning as early as 2004, proponents still argue that negative results in trials are due to inadequate and poor quality PRP.

PRP is also being used in the gynecological field as a number of gynecologists are now injecting PRP into vaginas. For, many believe the therapy will aid in providing better and more frequent orgasms. While this is the case, others in the field suggest the practice is dangerous and can be extremely risky for women at risk of various blood cancers.

While studies and trials have shown a lack of benefits, no adverse effects have been reported at this time. Some researchers have indicated that this inconsistency in findings is due to the lack of documentation and methodologies being used in the process. For example, the women whom are having PRP injected into the vagina are doing so without any documentation as to whether any studies and trials have been completed in the area.

There are four basic methods in which blood platelets are prepared for PRP injections. The growth factors and efficiency of tissue growth within PRP are the primary factors and basis for using the therapy in tissue repair. As such, it is important to be specific when explaining different types of pain to a orthopedic specialist as different areas of the body react different to PRP therapy.

PRP is prepared by removing blood from a potential client, then running it through a two step centrifuge process designed to split the platelet-rich plasma from the red blood cells. In most cases, this is done at a clinic which offers the treatment by using commercially available equipment and pre-packaged kits. While this is the case, the resulting substance can vary from individual to individual and clinic to clinic, thus making it more difficult to understand the exact efficacy and safety of the treatment.
