Thing To Consider When Making Hockey Lesson Plans

By Catherine Turner

When you are given the role to coach a group of individuals interested in a certain game, you must come up with a strategy on how to handle them. Good hockey lesson plans ensure that both the trainer and the trainee feel contented with what they achieve at the end of the day. The following are some of the things to consider when strategizing.

The time available will determine the kind of schedule you are going to work with. If your students have other commitments, you all should hold a meeting and discuss the time that will be convenient for everyone. This way none of the team members will miss out on important sessions. You should also consider your commitments as the trainer. If you are not available at the scheduled time, the learners will be disappointed.

The physical ability of the members will help in determining the amount of work that can be done in a single session. While some people are strong enough to take pressure for a long time, others might be affected by too much training that they may end up being hospitalized. You must take the time to observe the members and gauge their potential. This way you will create a favorable program.

The stage at which this group is in, is also important. It will determine how much effort will be needed. If for instance they still are in the introductory level, you will have to be mild with the training. They are not used to doing a lot of exercises, and if you pressure them, they might decide to quit. If you are dealing with a more experienced group, the training will focus on perfection.

The age group of your class is another thing you should put in mind. This varies from young children to senior citizens. All these people have different levels of understanding. For instance, teenagers can learn faster compared to old people. You can hence teach them different tactics in a day. The aged ones have to be taught at low speed especially if they have not played before.

As a team, you have objectives that you would like to meet. These are goals that help you to stay focused. However, they cannot be achieved if they are not included in the schedule that you will be working with. You need to define your goals, make a list of them and state how they are going to be fulfilled. When you all know the goals, unity is enhanced.

Consider whether it is a tournament season or not. If there is any game you are targeting, you have to be more committed as a team. More time has to be allocated for practice so that you can know the areas to perfect. It is however advisable not to overwork during this season as you might increase the chances of sustaining injuring among the members.

Even after coming up with what you feel is a good schedule, it is important to observe how your team is responding to it. Sometimes your estimates of their capabilities could be wrong. Maybe they can do more or even less than what you expected, and you will have to make adjustments. This way, all of you may be comfortable as there will be no overworking or under-working.
