Brooklyn Embroidery Could Be The First Step To Mindfulness

By Betty Kelly

Mindfulness is an increasingly hot topic and everyone seems to be promoting it. It is not a new concept, but along with the popularity of yoga, being mindful in our day to day lives is having surprisingly positive benefits. Using Brooklyn embroidery to develop mindfulness habits is an excellent way to get started.

Embroidery is the process of sewing delicate patterns and images onto a strong fabric. Absolutely anything can be embroidered and it is a popular trend in fashion at the moment, but the craft of embroidery has been around for centuries. It is also considered a form of art and some of the pieces artists create are so complicated and intricate.

The combination of embroidery and mindfulness is an unexpected one, but anyone who has tried embroidery will understand the connection. The focus and concentration you need to excel at this activity means that mindfulness is a natural side effect. If you start a piece when you are doing a million other things and not completely focused it will show in the stitches.

There are many tutorials online that can help you to get started, or you could use a book from the library or even attend a class. To begin with all you need is some fabric, a needle and thread. You will learn the basic stitches and very quickly you will appreciate how calm and focused your mind becomes while you sew.

It is the combination of feeling calm, embracing the quietness around you and concentrating on the task at hand that makes this hobby ideal for mindfulness. We are all so busy, multitasking all the time and we rarely take a moment to focus on one thing at a time. Mindfulness practice forces you to find time for yourself and to be completely in the moment.

Mindfulness is one of many aspects of meditation as it allows you to bring a little meditation into your everyday life. Being focused on the present moment and experiencing it completely means that you are not wasting time on anxiety and worrying about things that have already happened or things that might never happen.

Using an activity or hobby to develop mindfulness has added benefits. You are working towards a clear end goal, such as finishing the embroidery picture or learning how to do a particularly complex stitch. By the end you have progressed and created something, which helps self esteem and encourages you to keep going. You could also find yourself making new friends from the hobby.

Embroidery might not be the activity for you, but there will be something out there that offers you the chance to embrace mindfulness and use it to make your life a little better. Find something that you enjoy and that requires quietness and concentration and you will be able to use it to develop your own mindfulness practice.
